Satwik Diet
According to ayurveda and yoga, our character  depends upon the food which we intake. They have classified diet into 3 categories (a) satwik (b) rajasik (c) tamasik.

In this satwik diet is advisable to lead a healthy living. Sattva is defined as the quality of purity and goodness. Satvik food is that which is pure, clean and wholesome. A satvik food is a food which gives life, strength, courage, and self – determination. In other words this food gives as more than the gross physical requirement of the proper mix of proteins, carbohydrate, and fat. It also gives as subtle nourishment for vitality and consciousness.

Satvik food are light in nature, easy to digest, mildly cooling, refreshing and not disturbing the mind. They are best prepared with the love and awareness. Our food which we intake has influence on the mind, thoughts, emotion also affect our body.

Pure satvik food need to be chewed carefully and eaten in modest portion. The food should be enjoyed for its inherent   taste and quality , rather than the spices and seasoning that are added. Satvik food is basic and are cooked using minimal heat. It does not involve extensive processing and is hence usually closest to the way of food items exist in its natural form. Satvik food is usually eaten fresh and immediately after it is prepared.

Vegetables, fruits, milk and milk products consumed in their natural forms are good examples of satvik food. Vegetables like onion, garlic, red chilies  and black pepper and such other pungent and astringent spices are prohibited.

Common spices like ginger, cardamom, turmeric, coriander, cinnamon are strongly recommended. They  have the properties that are helpful for digestion.

Cow milk is considered the most complete nourishing and satvik of all satvik diet. In the absence of cow’s milk goat’s milk can be used as a replacement.

Satvik food for health and vitality

A person who eat satvik food has an ideal combination of physically, mentally and emotionally harmony and well  being and is at peace with himself. Such a person is always focused in his work, sleepless and remain energized all day long. Disease and disorders free, a satvik eater remain sensitive to the various nuances of his sensory being. On exposure to adverse conditions, a satvik person remain largely unaffected. Even if he falls sick, his recovery period is short. His/her vitality or immunity power is more comparing to the rajasik and tamasik.
